Orchid Packaging: Moisture and Temperature

Orchid Packaging: Moisture & Temperature Planning

A box that performs well in a dry packing area may behave differently after moisture exposure. Meanwhile, temperature changes can affect the plant even when the carton remains sound. Treat these as connected planning questions, with the nursery and carrier involved before selecting a packing configuration.

Orchid shipping: coordinate plant and pack conditions. Review diagram covering wet base, condensation, route exposure.
More vent holes are not a universal solution. Review the actual plant, pack and route together.

Separate the moisture and temperature problems

Problem or task What to review Practical design check
The carton base becomes wet or soft Water or damp growing media reaches the paperboard Locate the moisture source and review containment, base protection and material suitability.
A liner traps visible condensation The packing arrangement and route create unwanted moisture accumulation Review the whole configuration with the nursery, including plant condition at packing and exposure during transit.
Cold or hot conditions occur along the route The plant experiences conditions the package has not been assessed for Review shipment timing, service and any thermal packaging with the carrier and nursery.

A practical sample-review sequence

  1. Record how plants are prepared before packing and where moisture can contact the carton.
  2. Check base strength using the proposed materials and representative packed plants.
  3. Review ventilation openings together with the carton structure and route conditions.
  4. If thermal performance matters, assess the package for the actual route and expected duration; do not infer it from wall thickness alone.

Packaging does not replace plant-care guidance or a suitable transport service. Agree on those requirements before evaluating the sample.

Should I simply add more ventilation holes?

More openings are not a universal solution. They change airflow and may also change structural or thermal performance. The appropriate layout depends on plant condition, packaging materials and transport conditions.

Ask ZOHO Packaging to review your project

Tell us the destination, transport mode, expected transit time, packed plant condition and where wetting occurs. We can discuss material and structural options for a sample.
