2026/10/28 Robotic Arm Packaging: Restraint, Cushioning and Shipping Checks

Robotic arm packaging starts with the manufacturer's approved transport posture, support points and restraint requirements. The package needs to control unwanted movement while protecting joints, cables, the end effector and the controller.

A bare arm, an arm with tooling attached and a complete workstation represent different shipping configurations. Defining that configuration is essential before deciding whether the original packaging remains suitable or a custom structure needs assessment.

Start with the instructions for the exact model

Obtain the manufacturer's transport requirements and identify approved attachment points, load-bearing surfaces and areas that must not be compressed. Do not change the posture merely to fit a smaller carton.

Universal Robots recommends original packaging for its CB3 and e-Series and publishes separate guidance for transport without it. That guidance addresses unwanted joint vibration and rotation. It is model-specific evidence of why transport instructions matter, not a universal method for every robotic arm. Reference: Universal Robots transport guidance

If a faulty arm cannot reach its prescribed transport posture, obtain instructions from the equipment manufacturer before designing the return pack.

Map the shipping configuration

Configuration Packaging question
Arm and controller in separate packs Are weights, package identities and shipment references clear?
End effector remains attached Does it change the centre of gravity or need approved additional support?
Arm mounted on a workstation Have the workstation structure and arm restraint been assessed together?
Repair return or exhibition shipment Is the original pack complete, and is the transport configuration unchanged?

Design restraint and cushioning together

Fixing the base does not establish that every other part is adequately supported. Additional support, where required, must follow approved load paths and avoid connectors, cables and vulnerable covers.

EPE, EVA and other foams can be assessed as cushioning options. Their suitability depends on factors including contact area, thickness, compression behaviour, surface compatibility and manufacturing tolerances. Filling every visible gap is not a substitute for this assessment.

Inserts should also be practical to fit consistently. Orientation marks, distinct shapes and packing photographs can help operators identify the correct position and sequence.

Separate controllers, cables and installation parts

Use defined locations for a controller, tools and fasteners. Route and store cables within the manufacturer's bending requirements and protect connectors from pressure and pulling loads.

The customer should encounter unpacking instructions before removing critical restraints. Confirm that the required access, lifting equipment and installation space will be available at the destination.

Use a repeatable pre-shipment check

  1. Match the model, serial number and tooling configuration to the packaging revision.
  2. Confirm transport posture and restraint against manufacturer instructions.
  3. Check that inserts are seated and sensitive areas remain clear.
  4. Verify accessory quantities and their separate locations.
  5. Record photographs before closure, gross weight and package count.
  6. Confirm the unloading and unpacking method with the recipient.

Transport validation should include the equipment supplier's required inspection or functional checks. An undamaged carton alone cannot establish the condition of the robotic arm.

Frequently asked questions

Can the original packaging be reused?

Inspect its condition and completeness first. Moisture damage, crushed inserts, missing restraints or a changed shipping configuration require review.

Is a standard carton filled with foam sufficient?

That cannot be assumed. The complete package must satisfy the model's support, restraint and transport requirements.

Does a new gripper require new packaging?

It requires a review of dimensions, weight, centre of gravity and support. Modification and further validation depend on the effect of the change.

For an assessment by ZOHO Packaging, provide the model, transport drawings, weight, controller dimensions, tooling configuration and manufacturer requirements. Photographs of an existing pack and a description of the problem are also useful.
