Humanoid robot component packaging should reflect each module's load-bearing surfaces, finish, electronic sensitivity and shipping process. Actuators, sensors, control boards and cable assemblies may belong to one robot but require different protection.
For component suppliers, the package also needs to identify the correct part, revision and quantity. This becomes particularly useful when prototype parts, production parts and service spares move through the same supply chain.
Group components by protection requirements
| Joint, actuator or gearbox module |
Weight, concentrated loads, protruding shafts and approved support surfaces |
| Camera or other sensor |
Optical surfaces, connectors, pressure-sensitive areas and cleanliness |
| Control board or electronic module |
ESD requirements, connector clearance and mechanical support |
| Cable assembly and small accessories |
Bend limits, terminal protection, separation and identification |
These groups provide a starting point for a packaging brief. The supplier's and customer's specifications determine the final requirements.
Locate actuator modules using approved support surfaces
A locating pocket should support permitted surfaces and provide a clear removal direction. Identify shaft ends, encoder interfaces and precision mating surfaces that must be kept clear or need additional protection.
When several heavy modules share a carton, evaluate separation and base support together. Removal features should allow operators to handle the component by an approved method without pulling on cables.
Treat cushioning and ESD performance separately
A foam's mechanical cushioning properties do not establish its electrostatic performance. Colour and a general “anti-static” description are not substitutes for material specifications.
The EOS/ESD Association identifies discharge shielding as a consideration for susceptible items transported outside an electrostatic protected area. Select the required low-charging, conductive or dissipative, and shielding functions against the electronics protection specification. Reference: EOS/ESD Association control principles
Confirm suitable primary protection first, then assess locating inserts and the outer shipping package. Packing-area procedures should also match the product's ESD requirements.
Evaluate paper and foam by function
Paperboard dividers can be assessed for separation, identification and accessory organisation. Engineered paper structures may provide support, while shaped foam can be evaluated for specific contact and cushioning needs.
A plastic-reduction project can begin by reviewing parts that mainly organise or separate items. Any change affecting cushioning or electronic protection needs appropriate validation; reduced material weight alone does not prove equivalent performance.
Connect packaging revisions to product revisions
Link the component part number, product revision, insert revision and pack quantity. Drawings should identify compatible models, while labels should follow the customer's identification and traceability requirements.
When a prototype changes, check more than whether it still fits. Different weight, connector positions or contact surfaces may change protection. ISTA's retesting guidance addresses product, packaging and process changes that can affect performance. Reference: ISTA retesting guidance
Frequently asked questions
Can different modules share one insert design?
Only where their geometry, loading, protection requirements and validation support it. A shared outer carton with different inserts may be worth assessing.
Is black foam necessarily conductive?
No. Confirm the material specification and relevant performance evidence rather than relying on colour.
Can a component pack simply be enlarged for a complete humanoid robot?
No. Whole-robot transport introduces posture, joints, centre of gravity, handling and potentially batteries. Start with the robot manufacturer's instructions.
