Robot export packaging needs to address restraint, cushioning, load support and handling as one system. A carton sized around the robot's outer dimensions can still leave important questions unanswered: where is the centre of gravity, which surfaces can carry load, and how will the customer remove the equipment?
For robot manufacturers and system integrators, the starting point is an approved transport configuration and a clear shipping route. Materials can then be selected around those requirements.
Define the shipment before selecting materials
Provide dimensions and weight in the transport configuration, including controllers, cables and accessories. Identify approved support and attachment points, fragile projections and surfaces that must remain free from pressure. Include the manufacturer's handling instructions.
The distribution route also matters. State whether the equipment will remain on one pallet, move through consolidation facilities or be handled as an individual parcel. Describe stacking, storage duration and the handling equipment available at both ends.
For moisture-sensitive equipment, define the storage and transport conditions before selecting barrier materials, seals or desiccants. Adding desiccant to an otherwise unspecified package is not evidence of adequate moisture protection.
Compare complete packaging structures
| Heavy-duty corrugated carton with inserts and a base |
Can the equipment be restrained, and will the complete pack meet handling and stacking requirements? |
| Timber base, frame or crate |
Where are concentrated loads and attachment points, and how will the shipment be lifted? |
| Combined paper, foam and reinforced support structure |
Do the components work together without loading vulnerable equipment surfaces? |
These are assessment options, not weight-based selection rules. Carton ply count alone does not establish the capacity of a complete pack.
If the package includes raw-wood pallets, blocking or other timber components, check destination phytosanitary requirements. ISPM 15 covers relevant wood packaging and identifies exemptions for specified processed-wood materials. A corrugated outer cover does not remove the need to assess timber underneath it. Give restraint, cushioning and the outer pack clear roles
Restraint limits unwanted movement using approved load paths. Cushioning must be selected for the supported load and expected conditions. The outer pack and pallet provide the structure needed for handling, stacking and external protection.
Controllers and installation kits should have defined compartments when shipped with the main unit. Prototype packing should confirm that accessories cannot move into the robot and that cushioning does not press on sensors or connectors.
Agree on validation and acceptance
First check fit, assembly sequence and unpacking access. Then select appropriate transport tests with a capable testing organisation. ISTA identifies knowledge of the actual distribution environment as an important part of test selection. A single test should not be treated as universal approval for every shipping route. Reference: ISTA design and testing
Acceptance should include the equipment supplier's required condition and functional checks, not just an intact carton. Keep packaging drawings, material specifications, packing photographs and acceptance criteria under version control.
Frequently asked questions
Can a corrugated pack replace a wooden crate?
It may be an option for some equipment or modules after assessment. Manufacturer requirements, load paths, handling and validation determine suitability.
Does thicker cushioning always improve protection?
Thickness is only one parameter. Contact area, compression behaviour and the equipment's limits also matter.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Send transport dimensions, weight, drawings or photographs, approved fixing points, accessories, quantities, destination, transport mode and any customer test requirements. Identify batteries and sensitive electronics.
ZOHO Packaging in Taiwan can discuss carton, insert and support-structure options based on these inputs. Project scope, materials and validation arrangements are confirmed individually.
